Re: organic insect control
There are many organic controls for CPB, but which one is best for your
situation depends on what stage the larvae are in. The adults do very
minor damage--it's the larvae that really defoliate the crop. If they have
just hatched (from the yellow eggs on the undersides of the leaves), there
are some great Bt's, but the timing has to be just right. M-1, M-Track,
and Colorado Potato Beetle Beater are some brand names that most certifying
organizations accept--check with yours. If the larvae are bigger, rotenone
works. If you're dealing with a small patch, I've also heard that cornmeal
sprinkled on the plants works--apparently the little guys eat the cornmeal,
it expands in them and they burst. I've also heard that diatomaceous earth
sprinkled on the plants works (by scraping them up), but conditions have to
be dry.
Good luck!
