Seriously, I have seen it done a good while back. You use a whetstone, ie
a hand-held stone (my recollection is that it tapers both ways but I don't
know if that matters). You draw it briskly along the blade and at the
same time towards the edge, but the last is a lesser motion. The angle
is important.

I guess that the whole operation is just about as difficult as using the 
scythe in the first place!

Erm, I am talking about putting the edge back on, if it's very blunt it will
first need a go on a slow, wet sandstone wheel.
