Re: soil quality
Paula,
Looking at the .au in your header, I take it you're just getting
into the gardening season. How has this same plot performed in the past
and how have you treated it? I'm no purist, but if you have the means,
manure and compost will provide not only the necessary nutrients but also
the humus necessary for a satisfactory soil texture. Why would anyone
advocate specifically artificial fertilizer? If you're able, go first
class, do it right, use compost. During Spring seedbed preparation is a
good time to work in a lot of organic matter. Once you have an initial
load of organic matter, future organic matter can be added as mulch and
you can abandon most tillage for ever. The earthworms will keep it
stirred up for you. Use of only artificial fertilizer will "mine" the
organic matter and eventually you lose the water retaining properties of
the soil.
