FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1996
EPA SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON AGENCY-WIDE GUIDELINES FOR ECOLOGICAL RISK
ASSESSMENT
EPA is seeking public comment on its "Proposed Guidelines for
Ecological Risk Assessment," scheduled for publication in the Federal
Register on Sept. 9. The proposed guidelines expand EPA's 1992 report
"Framework for Ecological Risk Assessment" (EPA/630/R-92/001).
Ecological risk assessment is a process for organizing and analyzing
data, information, assumptions and uncertainties to evaluate the
likelihood of adverse ecological effects. The proposed guidelines
were designed to improve the quality of EPA's ecological risk
assessments and increase the consistency of assessments among the
Agency's regional and program offices. Comments are due to the Agency
by Dec. 9. The proposed guidelines can be accessed electronically via
Internet at
http://www.epa.gov/ORD/WebPubs/fedreg. For more information, call
Bill van der Schalie at EPA's National Center for Environmental
Assessment at 202-260-4191.
