A. incana will grow in wet soil. All the alders are N fixing as
well as valuable pioneers well suited to reclamation of mineral
soils and bank stabilization. Habits range from the shrubby
(to 10') American Green Alder (A. crispa) to A. japonica which
may reach 80'. Most are fairly cold hardy, an exception being
A. cordata. Although short-lived they are useful on the farm
as the wood is fairly durable in contact with wet soil. Those
in extremely cold situations may wish to look into the Himalayan
exemplars.
