The ram pump will push water uphill. However, it operates
>from  the force of water falling down from a pond embankment
or dammed up spring to create a change in elevation. 

The sling pump (also known as a duckbill pump), will
also pump water uphill (or up to a mile in distance on more 
level ground).  However, the sling pump operates from the 
force of water moving laterally in a stream; thus, a change
in elevation is not required which means you do not have
to dam up the spring as you would with a ram pump. 

Likewise, you do not need an electric-, solar-, or gas-powered
pump to achieve the goal of irrigation.
 
The big difference is that the sling pump is much more
elusive in terms of finding a supplier.  The Rife Sling Pump 
(U.S.A.) was mentioned in a 1993 article, but no address is available. 

Any leads on a supplier for this duckbill-pump creature would be
greatly appreciated. 

A nearby farmer has a perfect watermelon-growing spot down in 
a stream bottom, and the duckbill pump method really is the best 
low-cost solution for getting water to the crop.
