GREENPEACE FINDS NON-GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SOYA FOR EUROPEAN RETAILERS

Press Release

Amsterdam, 25 October 1996 (GP) -- Greenpeace today publishes
evidence to show that -- contrary to food industry claims --
genetically engineered soya is being separated from normal
soya and publishes a list of suppliers who provide non-
genetically engineered beans.

In spite of what food manufacturers are being told -- that
genetically engineered soya can't be separated from the normal
bean during the harvest -- Greenpeace has evidence that this
is not true.

Not only is it possible to separate the beans but the
producers, Monsanto, have actually insisted that they be
separated. They have even made farmers sign contracts saying
that they will separate the beans in order to buy them back as
seed for next year's planting.

"This finally dispels the myth that it is not possible to
separate," said Greenpeace campaigner Michelle Sheather. "We
want the food manufacturers to come clean on this one and
insist on a clean stream of soya . They certainly can no
longer use the excuse that it is not possible to separate."
Unilever Germany anounced yesterday that they will be
demanding separation of soya supplies.

Greenpeace also publishes a list of US suppliers who can
ensure non-genetically engineered beans, and points to the ever
increasing number of food retailers in Europe who are opposing
genetically engineered foodstuffs.

"Now that Greenpeace has done the work for them we challenge
food manufacturers such as Unilever, Danone and Nestle to
contact these suppliers and others and order normal beans from
them," added Ms Sheather.

Only one to two per cent of the US soyabean production
contains genetically engineered beans. Europe imports about
9.7 million metric tons.

Greenpeace welcomes the news that more and more retailers are
opposing genetically engineered food. Earlier this week
Sweden's food retailers --including the two biggest, ICA and
KF -- joined the long list of European food retailers and
consumer associations who are demanding separation and
labelling.

Greenpeace believes that genetically engineered crops pose
uncalculable risks to the environment and should not be grown.

Notes to Editors

1. Separation of Monsanto's Roundup Ready Soybean

TRANSCRIPT

Extract from Greenpeace interview with Dave Reiff owner of the
Reiff Elevator seed company in Iowa, USA, October 1996.

Interviewer: The contractual agreement that Monsanto has with
farmers growing RRS this year is to keep the RRS segregated
>from the conventional soya beans and use the RRS as seed for
future crops. Is that correct?

Dave Reiff: That's true. To the extent of my knowledge that's
absolutely the control they wanted. Because of their seed
business that's how they're intending to multiply the
availability to other farmers. About maybe half the people
that wanted them this year got them. The seed is very short
supply...to me there's every chance that they would not be
used in market channels...

Interviewer: So Monsanto doesn't want these beans mingled with...

Dave Reiff: Well, that's our experience and our understanding
and they were very tight to get and you had to actually sign
agreement under their rules so I think that's an accurate statement.
