Yes, I too try to avoid the "Kill a tree for Jesus" craze.  However, it is
entirely possible to overstate the ecological benefits.  People don't go into
the forest and cut down these trees any more.  They are raised on land where
the ecological destruction of raising Christmas trees is much less than if
other crops were grown.

A suggestion:  next year grow some "straw flowers", everlastings.  They make
very beautiful seasonal decorations and can be used for several years running
then composted.
