Re: Organic/E.coli "Connection" in SF Ex/Chro

I just finished a brief letter to the editor ... it has a very limited
scope, because I did not want to go beyond my field of expertise. I would
say that the journalist had a very nasty and sarcastic undertone, which
certainly does not contribute to an informed, intelligent debate. I, too,
hope that someone will be able to respond more fully to that article. I
have attached my letter, in case you're interested.

Mr. Strick in "E. Coli bug" incorrectly stated that Alta Dena
unpasteurized milk was "organic labeled." Alta Dena milk was, at one
time, raw (unpasteurized); however, the question of pasteurization is
entirely separate from the topic of
organic farming methods. Alta Dena milk never was, nor ever claimed to be
organic.

Organic milk production, as defined by the California Organic Foods Act of
1990, forbids use of hormones to increase milk production (such as the
infamous recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), strictly limits the use of
antibiotics, and forbids use of any herbicides or chemical fertilizers on
grazing land or on feeds.

Mr. Strick raises some interesting issues, but he should be careful to
state the facts correctly. For the record, we pasteurize all of our
certified organic milk and dairy products.
