Re: flying spiders and the causes of food shortages and famine

A journal no longer extant, about Africa and hunger, had 2 very good
reports. They both concerned women farmers ( the norm in Africa), who had
been lucky enough to be contacted by someone who told them how to farm
organically, utilizing waste plant material to build up organic matter,
and how to use natural plant products they could make themselves to fight
pests. The whole point was that the organic matter increase in their soils
could make their lives and work easier. Soil would be fluffed up, not
needing those horrible heavy hoes. Pests would decrease as soil improved
and therefore plants would not be stressed enough to give off the signals
calling for pests.

The tremendous impact this had on the 2 women was spectacular. I saved the
stuff for my files. These women were immensely cheered by some practical,
easy, everyday ways to improve their methods and results.

I was surprised that there was not more said in the journal about getting
those good helpers to contact more farm women.

Of course, everyone has heard about the well-intentioned folks who take
out or send out fancy machinery, for which a poor African farmer has no
way to get the gas needed, or electricity, to make the machines run. The
big things sits and rusts away.
