International Conference on Sustainable Urban Food Systems:
The Centre for Studies in Food Security at Ryerson Polytechnic University
in cooperation with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC),
FoodShare Metro Toronto, Oxfam Canada, the Toronto Food Policy Council,
and the Toronto Food Research Network is organizing a conference to
develop conceptual and practical frameworks for sustainable urban food
systems that would take into account both global and local conditions. The
conference will take place at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto,
May 22-25 1997 and will welcome concerned researchers, practitioners, and
community organizers. The conference will deal with a variety of topics on
URBAN FOOD SYSTEMS including physical and space dimensions and urban
design; social and cultural variations and access questions; economic and
political issues and food policy; health and nutrition; production,
distribution and food security; and environmental concerns.

The Conference is designed to encourage maximum participation to
gain comparative insights, to develop analytical frameworks for
identifying and analysing unique features of the urban food systems, and
to discuss strategies for sustainable systems. We particularly welcome
attempts to examine local-global connections and their social impacts
within an urban framework. The conference will have paper sessions,
poster sessions, panel discussions, workshops and local tours
dealing with different aspects of food security issues within an urban
context. Please send your presentation and workshop proposals and paper
abstracts to the organizing committee by January 15, 1997.
