Re: Comfrey
I use comfrey tincture in conjunction with witch hazel & arnica for my
bruise juice (which can only be used on unbroken skin due to the arnica).
It is my understanding that comfrey (or boneknit) should not be used
internally...studies show that it contains pyrrolizidines which cause
serious liver damage & cancer in laboratory animals. This is
particularly true of the young leaves of the plant. Comfrey also
contains allantoin which is used in a number of OTC crams & balms.
Allantoin is especially good for cold sores (I use Herpecin-L lip balm
myself). The roots contain more than twice as much allantoin as the
leaves and are thus used moreso than the leaves for wound treatment.
