Since 1989, ATTRA has published an annual update to the Sustainable Farming Internships and Apprenticeships list. The Year 2000 edition is completed and now available in print and electronic formats. Sustainable Farming Internships and Apprenticeships http://www.attra.org/attra-rl/intern.html The ATTRA "Interns" list, as it is commonly known, is a popular networking tool for farmers and interns looking to make connections, and should be especially helpful as people make plans for the upcoming growing season in the new millenium. In this latest edition, roughly two dozen new farm listings have been acquired from the "Educational and Training Opportunities in Sustainable Agriculture" publication compiled by USDA's Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC). By cooperative agreement, ATTRA will in the future maintain this list of farm-based internships and AFSIC will focus on university-based programs. To contact AFSIC, go to http://www.nal.usda.gov/afsic/index.html The update is 71 pages long, with over 200 entries describing farms and training centers offering internships and apprenticeships in organic farming and sustainable agriculture. In addition, the Interns list provides an interesting glimpse into farm work and characteristics of small farm agriculture in the United States because the farm descriptions were written by the farmers themselves. As an example, several dozen farms in the list are now organized as CSA's. You can also read about CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training), which is a collection of twelve farms in the Northeastern states that offer fortnightly seminars accompanied by farm tours in addition to on-farm training received by the apprentices during the work week. Sustainable Farming Internships and Apprenticeships is compiled by Katherine Adam, ATTRA Information Specialist. Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas P.O.
