Media Training for Activists Dear Friends, Attached you will find an announcement about an upcoming media training workshop in Maryland for sustainable agriculture activists, and a registration form for the event. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has approved funding for the workshop, and we want to get the word out as fast as possible to potential participants. PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ANYONE WHO CAN USE IT. As a beneficiary myself of several media workshops put on by the Safe Energy Communications Council, I can vouch for the quality, relevance and usefulness of the information. The SECC trainers are top notch, and they've helped a lot of people be a lot more effective in their work. We at the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trial are pleased to offer you this training opportunity, and hope you will join us in August! Sincerely, Kat Griffith Communications Coordinator Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and WICST P.S. If you are interested in media training but are unable to attend the August workshop, please let me know. We will be organizing a second workshop during the coming year, and would appreciate your input regarding possible dates and locations. If you are an easterner, keep in mind that the next workshop will not be in the east. TO: Integrated Farming Systems Network Sustainable Agriculture Working Groups Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture RE: Media Skills and Strategy Workshop for Sustainable Agriculture Activists FROM: Kat Griffith, Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trials, and the IFS Network A two-day media workshop for sustainable ag activists will be offered on August 27-29 at the Bowers Conference Center, Elkneck State Park, Delaware, on Chesapeake Bay (about 50 miles from Philadelphia.) The workshop will cover various media skills (eg. developing and staying on a message, interview skills, planning a media campaign) and how to integrate media into outreach and education activities. We will fine-tune the agenda as we learn what participants most need. The trainers will be from the Safe Energy Communications Council, which has provided highly regarded workshops to environmental activists nationwide. Cost: Tuition will be free. Participants will cover their own transportation, room and board. Accomodations: Multiple occupancy (4-10 people) rooms are available for about $11-15/night (depending on how many of us there are). Camping is available but discouraged. A hotel about 8 miles away offers single rooms for $65/night, or doubles for $85. We are working to keep meals as inexpensive as possible. We expect the total cost for room and board at the Conference Center to be less than $100/person. Timing: We have scheduled the workshop to follow the Integrated Farming Systems Networking Conference, which will be held a few miles up the road, ending at noon on Tuesday the 27th. The Media Workshop will begin at 4:30 pm. that afternoon and will run until 1:00 pm. on Thursday. Eligibility: Anyone working in sustainable agriculture advocacy (particularly with IFS, SAWG or the Campaign) may attend. The workshop will be particularly useful for those who already work to some degree in communications, education and outreach. Participants should be committed to doing media work as an integral part of their outreach work following the workshop. Organizations and projects may send more than one individual to the workshop. Scholarships: There is limited transportation assistance available for some participants. Stipends will be negotiated individually, and will be made on a first come, first served basis. Transportation: We will need to arrange transportation to and from airports for some participants. If you will be driving and could offer a ride to or from Philadelphia or Baltimore airports please let me know as soon as possible. Applications: Use the attached, or contact the address below for a registration form. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
