Get a good basic book on soil ecology.  I like this one:

    _Start with the Soil_ by Grace Gershuny, 1993, Rodale Press

Organic gardening is fundamentally about building a vital, healthy
balanced community of soil organisms, large and small.  Be good to
your soil, and your soil will be good to your plants--and you!
