Snakes in our sewer pipes

We live in a rural (becoming suburban) area of eastern PA and have a 2
acre lot, about half is wooded. I love the snakes, garters and blacks,
outside, but recently they have decided to crawl up our sewer pipes
and visit us in the bathroom. That I don't care for so much. Our
solution so far has been to put some ammonia in the bathtub because
snakes have a strong sense of smell, but that is probably not best for
the environment. I hesitate to call in a sewer person because they
would probably put some strong poison in the pipes plus charge us a
lot of money. We all have wells so we really want to avoid poisons.
 Any ideas?
