I am given to understand that the ability of legumes to form
nodules (and thus the rate at which they fix nitrogen) varies
considerably between species. Phaseolus vulgaris is a poor
nitrogen fixer, while Vicia faba (broad beans) often do not
benefit much at all from additional nitrogen fertilizer.
