Dave,

Portland cement is made by burning lime carbonate and clay at high
temperature, then ground up.  It  was invented by Joseph Aspdin in the
1820's.  Is it "Earth friendly"?  It doesn't have much impact on the soil
once in place, but its manufacture could be a different story.  Here in
Florida it is a local product, made in vast quantities.  The plants are
huge sprawling affairs that resemble strip mines.  I think its worth it,
myself, but it sure is a trade-off.
