Serviceberry -
	Ever wonder about the name? Here in Kentucky, and throughout
Appalachia, it was common to delay memorial services until spring: the
ground was frozen and travel was difficult.  Bodies were stored in their
coffins, in sheds or barns.  In spring, graves were dug and memorial
services were held, right at the time that serviceberry was blooming.
It's a lovely tree (7 species) that we should be using more in native
landscapes.
