Conference Announcement

Hello, everyone--

This year the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference will be held 7-10
December in Milwaukee, WI. I will be chairing a special session on wildlife
in the agricultural landscape. I would be pleased to include papers on this
topic from anyone, whether or not you're in the Midwest. Below is a
description of the session and how to submit an abstract. Below that is a
general description of the conference. Hope to hear from you!

Effects of Alternate Agricultural Practices on Wildlife
Monday afternoon, 8 December 1997

The Midwest is characterized by some of the most intensively managed
agricultural land in the world. How have wildlife communities adapted to
this highly disturbed habitat? How have wildlife managers dealt with
managing wildlife communities on private farmland? Are there agricultural
practices that we can encourage that allow wildlife to thrive? This session
will explore alternatives in managing private agricultural land and their
effects on wildlife populations. We are looking for papers on any of the
following topics:

1) documentation of wildlife response to current, widespread agricultural
practices;
2) effects of new/alternative practices on wildlife populations. These
practices can either be those intentionally designed to benefit
wildlife or emerging practices that may have unintentional effects
on wildlife;
3) innovative programs that encourage adoption of wildlife friendly
practices by farmers; or
4) other relevant topics.

If you are interested in making a presentation at this session, or would

General Information:
You are cordially invited to attend the 1997 Midwest Fish and Wildlife
Conference from 7-10 December at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and MECCA in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The theme of this year's conference is Managing
Natural Resources: Integrating Ecology and Society. We've all heard the
theory of Ecosystem Management ... but what about the practice? The goal of
this conference is to provide PRACTICAL information and techniques needed to
apply ecosystem management principles when you return home to your job.

Symposia, workshops, special sessions, and contributed paper sessions are
planned to advance our knowledge in fish and wildlife management and to
discuss applied ecosystem management. Throughout the conference, we will
investigate innovative and collaborative solutions to the puzzle of
integrating a sustainable environment, society, and the economy.

Use of "case histories" and interactive discussions between speakers and
the audience will make information relevant to all who attend.

Wildlife symposia, workshops, and special sessions include:

      Half-day special sessions:
þ Practical Applications of Ecosystem Management (four half-day
              sessions)
þ Prevention and Control of Invasive Species
þ Effects of Alternative Agricultural Practices on Wildlife
