PUBLIC EVENTS MARK LEOPOLD CENTER'S DECADE

AMES-The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture invites the public to
help celebrate its first decade by attending two free public events
sponsored as part of its tenth anniversary conference next Wednesday and
Thursday, July 30 and 31, at Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building,
Iowa State University, Ames.

"An evening reflecting on the land" will be the July 30, 7:15 p.m.,
featuring Michael Carey, poet and farmer; and Buddy Huffaker, ecologist.
Carey will read his poetry and from an essay he wrote on "Reading and
Writing the Land."  Huffaker, who works for the Aldo Leopold Foundation in
Baraboo, Wisconsin, will share observations from his close work with the
Leopold family, descendants of the famous Iowa-born ecologist.

On Thursday, a 2:45 p.m. program is entitled "Planting the future:  Aldo
Leopold and Henry A Wallace on agriculture's next century" and features
major biographers of these famous Iowans, talking about what they might
have to offer as insights for the decades ahead.  Curt Meine is considered
the pre-eminent Leopold biographer, and is a highly regarded naturalist.
John Hyde, a former Iowa journalist, is currently working on an Henry A.
Wallace biography with former Iowa U.S. Senator John Culver.  Providing a
farmer perspective on their comments is David Williams, Villisca, a Leopold
Center advisory board member.
