Latest on Roundup and Resistance

The October, 1997 "Farm Chemicals" has a brief report entitled
"Monsanto Co., St. Louis Mo. Has Confirmed a Case of Natural Weed Tolerance
to Glyphosate." The case of tolerance -- resistance to everyone else --
entails ryegrass in Australia, where Roundup has been used heavily in wheat
production for years.

        The article reports --

"However, Monsanto says the implications for farmers are minimal, as
this is the only confirmed case of resistance and because reistance can be
managed through cultivation and the use of other herbicides..."

Wonder if Monsanto will start offering rebates on cultivators, to
sort of compliment their technology charge.

With Roundup Ready crops about to overtake the country-side,
resistance will inevitably emerge in this country, along with hard to
predict shifts in weed communities, pressure and control problems.

If anyone on this list hears of resistance-Roundup related research
or developments in the field, please forward information to me for the PMAC
web page <http://www.pmac.net>. I am particularly interested in the impacts
of higher rates and later applications of Roundup on soil microorganisms and
communities, the bioavailability of P and other nutrients, and microbial
biocontrol of root pathogens.
