Here is a question whose answer would make a good story for the
Activist. Any information out there for Carol?

Hi

I am halfway through a Masters of Planning Practice degree at Auckland
University. As part of our course we conduct a research project of our
choice on a planning issue. My topic will look at the issues
surrounding
the use of fruit and nut trees for amenity plantings in the Auckland
Region. In particular I will be concentrating on street trees.

Do you know of any communities where there has been a policy to plant
street trees which produce edible crops (any where in the world)? I am
interested to find instances where this has happened, what has been
planted
and how successful the projects have been.

If you could help me, or give me the names of any contacts who could
help
me, I would appreciate it.

Cheers

Carol

Hi,
Many of you may not know that I spoke with Steve Arpin regarding the
possibilbity of selling at the Wed mkt. I am, with partner Ivy, growing
on 1 1/2 Acres at Earthaven Ecovillage. We aim to grow all we can of
everything we can. We have a large pest population that hits brassicas
and cucurbits especially hard. Hopefully more predators will improve the
balance along with general soil improvement. We expect to focus on Black
Mountain and Fairview markets before making the longer trip to Asheville
and so would not be present often. Our garden is growing in a spot that
was forest a year and a half ago and it will be a while before we know
what we can grow best. In the meantime we are planting perennial fruits,
berries, nuts, flowers, and etc. We are presently growing greens for
village consumption and getting seedlings started. Shiitake mushroom
production has already started and will continue through till fall with
yields around 1-3lbs / day. Hope to meet with the rest of you at some
point soon.
