Most of the evidence suggests that vapor diffusion isn't much of an
issue. To protect the insulation from moisture, make sure you've
air-sealed the wall so that moisture hitch-hiking on air can't get into the
cavity. In your climate and in the retrofit situation, sealing on the inside
will probably make the most sense.
