Re: GBlist: Natural Linoleum

Eric:

Linoleum does off-gas after it is installed. As a part of the specification
process for floor coverings for a new EPA facility in Research Triangle
Park, NC, we modeled indoor air impacts from linoleum and vinyl floor
covering. We used RISK, an EPA indoor air model, to simulate the interior
of the building and emissions factors taken from the literature. The
results indicated that both the vinyl and the linoleum generated very
similiar concentrations of vapor phase organic compounds, approximately
35-40 ug/m3 VOC, over the modeled scenario. (The linoleum products were
largely aldehydes resulting from the oxidation of the natural ingredients in
linoleum.) We concluded that with respect to indoor air quality concerns
there was insufficient difference between the two floor coverings to drive a
decision.
