GBlist: Re: window, high performance on-site test

Cameron,
Thanks for the enthusiasm!

<< Okay, my questions:

 1. "Shade scheduling" is a new term to me--what do you mean by it? (Also,
some info. on derivation, who is using it, etc.)>>

OH MY.... have I opened another can of worms? OKOKOK. Shade scheduling is
one of those bad-taste-in-your-mouth, usually ACTIVE systems approaches that
protects you windows (or walls, or roofs) from direct solar radiation. See
anything previously written by Bill Shurcliff on the subject. BUT WAIT,
there's more.... shade scheduling can take on OTHER, PASSIVE characteristics
as well. Exampes: East and West facing glazing with seasonal shading by a
strategically placed wisteria or rose or grape arbor. NEVER underestimate
the power of mother nature to help with cooling load management. South
passive? Overhangs APPROPRIATELY sized. (See Olgay, Balcombe, Mazria, or any
of the many on this subject)

<< 2. Are you keeping up with whom is producing the photo-, thermal-, or
electro-sensitive glazings? Or should I go to LBL for this?>>

See LBNL or NREL for more info.

<< 3. In your professional opinion, what is the best means of "optimizing"
window systems for "operation and function?" Ex. WINDOWS 4? hard-earned
knowledge of passive solar + glazing + window systems? (Although few
inquire here about such thorough design details, I'M awefully interested
in learning the specifics, both for specialized design and for limited
 budgets.) >>

Gads. Best? How many fights do you want me to start? IF you assume
appropriate modeling and control and scheduling, (BIG ASSUMPTION) I truely
believ we can fairly accuratey predict building energy performance and energy
operating costs. BEST program? I'll stick my neck out and say that more
important than the program is the quality of the scheduling and modeling
assumptions employed. ANY good program should enable such optimization.
Short list? DOE-2E, ENERGY-10, REM Design, MicroPas. Sure there are
others. (and those whose favorite programs were not listed, please don't
beat me up... I know there are others..... perhaps someone would like to
assemble a list of programs and two columns of plusses and minuses? Any
takers? Has this already been done?)
