GBlist: Taking Credit for Green Buildings

Subject: Thread on pollution emissions and green builders
getting to take some credit for reductions in pollution

A good set of references on this topic is contained in the report
"Better Building Codes for Energy Efficiency" by the Alliance to
Save Energy. (1991) This report also spawned ASHRAE Thermal Envelopes
Conference paper (peer reviewed) and another paper in DSM for the
Global Environment (Synergic Resources). Later the approach was
revised into a worksheet for builders who have data on how much more
energy efficient their homes are than "code built". By entering the
fuel savings calculated from appropriate methods (by others) the
user can return results: pounds of emissions avoided, and a crude
estimate of the societal value of the avoided emissions. The later
estimate is crude because the playing field of emissions regulations
is changing (Clean Air Act Ammendments...) and includes calculations
related to particulate emissions currently a hot (so to speak) topic.

Also in the Alliance/CREST consumer program "Home Energy Checkup" that
was rolled out at the Alliance dinner June 1997, a very similar approach
is used to link pollution avoidance (CO2) with energy efficiency decisions
in upgrading existing homes.

Since this work is again generating interest, I have decided to post
a protected MS Excel worksheet on my web site, which should be available
to obtain on-line by COB Monday 10/27. If it is useful, and you would
like to be able to edit the file, please follow the instructions that
are contained in the ZIP file on our web site that bears the worksheet.

The paper is available from EEBA in the 1993 Conference proceedings.
