Hi 

We live completely on solar electricity - yes  it is possible - you see we
have 24 solar electric panels mounted on a duel axle tracker which means
that it is equivalent to 36 panels. These produce enough electricity
stored in our alkaline type ( nickel Iron) batteries to operate our system
for three to five days. What we use from our 24VDC batteries is lights,
solar efficient ref./freezer, water pressure pump plus a 4500 watt sign
wave inverter. The inverter gives us AC electricity so that we can operate
our normal appliances such as dish washer, trash masher, Hover cleaner,
washing machine, toaster, small kitchen appliances plus a wood working
shop which includes a radial arm saw(energy hog)....... as my wife Fran
says she doesnıt want to suffer ....... and we donıt ..... as we have all
the toys our ³city² friends have BUT no monthly bills........ A set up
like we have doesnıt come cheep.......... we did start for less than
$600.00 as we only had one solar panel and a sears battery.  

I have been writing a weekly "ask Mr Solar" column for the past three
years in the south  west which has been published in several local
newspapers - It is now on the Web as you will see the column is written so
that anyone can understand and apply solar electricity to their every day
use. We, Fran and I, have learned through trial and error what works and
what doesnıt in solar and want to pass this information on to you.

You may want to read some of the information published by the DOE on this
topic at:

Keep in mind that the low-e is meant to block heat radiation ("southern"
low-e blocks heat radiation from entering your house; "northern" low-e
blocks heat radiation from leaving your house.)

Argon is the only cost-effective inert gas for most applications (as far
as I know). Argon increases the insulation value of your window, against
heat loss or gain by conduction.

To answer your question properly, you would have to consider how much
energy/$ you spend annually heating and/or cooling your house. If the
amount is small, you  won't be saving much in the way of $, but you may
make your house more comfortable. Dual low-e may be overkill, but single
low-e with with argon fill will only add about 5-8% to the cost of a good
quality window, not counting installation costs.

I'm not sure about that for Southern California. Up here in the north, the
answer would be yes, since the low-e and argon fill block heat loss from
the house, which is more an issue on the north side of the house.

The Building Design Assistance Center (BDAC) at the Florida Solar Energy 
Center (FSEC) has given its Bulletin Board Service (BBS) a facelift.  The new 
improved BBS describes recent field and laboratory research on energy
efficient technologies and renewable energy products at the Florida Solar
Energy Center. It also provides up to date sources for energy efficiency and
renewable energy equipment.

The new BBS is menu driven and provides a colorful display to users who have 
ANSI terminal capabilities. The bulletin board offers a detailed look at BDAC 
research activities. Information is available on all on-going projects 
including preliminary analysis and review.  Users will be kept up to date with 
results and findings as they become available. 

Users can search for FSEC and BDAC publications using keywords. A few popular 
publications are available for on-line reading.  BDAC publications can be 
downloaded as zipped WordPerfect files.  These include all available BDAC 
Sources files as well as other research reports. The following BDAC Sources 
files are available on the BBS: 

  - Efficient Glazing Systems     - Lighting/Energy Controls
  - Efficient Roofing Products    - Lighting Products
  - Energy Management Systems     - Insulation systems and radiant barriers

Several other popular features can be down loaded:

   * 1995 Directory of Most Efficient Refrigerators and Freezers
   * 1995 Directory of the Most Efficient Room Air Conditioners.
   * 1995 Directory of FSEC-rated Solar Water Heating Equipment.

Not all BDAC reports are available at this time, but are being compiled to be
placed on the BBS for users to download. We also hope to soon add a
comprehensive directory of PV manufacturers and vendors which has already been
produced.

Other features of the BBS include on-line registeration to receive FSEC and 
BDAC newsletters and a "Questions" message board for posting questions on 
energy-related issues. Users can log on to the BDAC BBS at 407-730-2322. The
communications settings are the standard 8,N,1 with speeds of up to 28.8 kbps. 

We expect to have the bulletin board available for Internet access from FSEC's
Web site home page later this fall after FSEC moves to its new state-of
the-art energy efficient facility in Cocoa, Florida. Questions about the

I had a Ford van that I lived in on remote work 
assignments, not for 2 months at a time without outside 
energy & food input, hee, but it worked well and was very 
simple:
I just installed a 37 Watt older crystalline photovoltaic 
panel on the roof.  I used 18 guage standard AC "cheap 
extension cord quality" zip cord to run it to the existing 
auto battery, and after a while installed a diode in series 
with the positive lead to the battery to prevent the panel 
drawing a few milliamps at night when not exposed to light.
I did not have any real heavy power consumers, but ran the 
following with no problems:
Cheap mail-order 12 Volt flourescent light (15 watts or so) 
for reading
Small Black & White TV set
Commodore 64 Computer and monitor
12 Volt Soldering Station for electronic tinkering
FM stereo & tape deck with a used "Ghetto Blaster" boom box 
I bought for $20 at a flea market
12 Volt DC fan to keep me air cooled during hot weather
Various amateur "ham" radio transceivers

All the above was intermittent usage.  Using no extra 
batteries you have to monitor your battery voltage and keep 
>from  running it below 11 volts.  I found little trouble as 
I drove the vehicle enough to keep the battery alive in 
spite of often drawing more than the 3 amps available from 
the solar panel.  With a panel that size even if I did run 
my battery down "in the middle of nowhere" with a day or 2 
of good sunshine I'd have enough "juice" to get the engine 
started again.
Nice-to-have enhancements if affordable:
Automatic voltage monitor that disconnects the battery when 
the voltage falls below 11 or so volts (with deep cycle 
batteries the voltage can drop maybe a volt lower without 
longterm battery damage).
Extra battery compartment with deep cycle batteries and a 
relay that allows the 12 volt "accessories" to run off the 
deep cycle battery without draining the vehicle main 
starting battery
             3 Amp 100 PIV diode

IMHO, the "sci" hierarchy is for scientists engaged in active research.
Unfortunately, that is becoming less and less the case as us layfolk
drive the researchers away with a lot of questions that basically waste
their time.  I think an "alt.energy.homepower" group is a good idea.
It would help turn the scattershot resources out here now into a sort
of "one-stop=shopping."

Again, IMHO: Self-reliance is a dangerous myth.  I have always felt that
people who embrace renewables to be "idependent" are walking down a path
that lets them believe they owe nothing to society and that they no longer
have a stake in the health of the community.

Unless you do without all modern conveniences an "off-gridder" is still
just as much dependent on modern industrial civilization as anyone else.
He or she is just polluting a little less.  I don't mean to minimize the
value of that, but merely to highlight that it is not possible to live
truly apart from the community.  Any such distance is merely comfortable
illusion.  For that reason, I would much prefer "homepower."

Greetings. I've been interested in "solar power" a number of times
and each and every time I've had to scrap the project/idea simply
because it was totally unworkable: low information reference, no
affordable vendors/sources, no support from others, etc. Kinda
made me feel like I was working with something involving Plutonium...

Well, this group will NEVER have more posts until that stigma
changes. I'm sure PV development has been going on for decades...
were the heck is the surplus market for the obsolete stuff?
It can't be that difficult for someone "in the know" to sit down
for a few hours and come up with a freeware program or design
for a converter that converts the power from such easily-obtainable
PV obsolete cells into, say, 12VDC... at some useful amperage.
Tons of modern switching PS chips exist and it can't be that hard
to put one to a good use.

Something as simple as a list of a few suppliers of surplus
PV panels, a few notes on using them and precautions, a
converter to 12V in a few common formats (GIF/PS), and maybe
some info on newer PV panels... some people like to graduate
>from  obsolete - yet low cost panels to more useful technology.

Well, I don't know. I have no clue - even with some panicky
searching for sources. It's either a trade-secret or completely
useless... at least what I was interested in.

Anyone who knows care to start something? I'd be willing to add
a section on my WWW server to this topic. I putzed around with
an RC glider that had solar cells on wings that extended its
flight time but not only were they the "crystalline" kind and
shattered with every non-perfect landing, they are impossible
to find cheaply. Sigh. Oh well... scrapped that :-(

These calculations are somewhat complex, if you are considering passive solar as your 
main heat source.  The Passive Solar Industries Council has a complete book and software 
program for this engineering problem.

design clues.

Some of the variables involved in such a design include;

What is your heating profile and when does it occur?
In other words, how many degree-days of heating is required in your area?

What is the heat loss rate of your structure?  Even landscaping comes in to play here, 
such as berming, evergreens planted to the north to act as  nothern wind breakers, etc.

What is the solar insolation in your area and when does it occur?

What are your backup systems (eg, masonry fireplace, ground-source heat-pump, etc)?

Do you plan to use a Trombe wall, free-standing thermal mass, floor mass, etc?  You'll 
find water is far and away the highest-capacity, non-phase change storage medium, in the 
form of freestanding tanks (wall-shaped or cylindrical).

How do you plan to provide for effective daylighting while preventing glare?  I'm 
presently looking for windows that block UV radiation but are not low-E (because of the 
amount of infrared radiation they block).  UV will fade furniture and increase skin 
cancer likelihood.

I am in the middle of a similar design effort myself, and a utilizing the designs of a 
modular home manufacturer that has participated with DOE on this subject (see Solar 
Today, Sept/Oct 1995).

If anybody has any additional info, I'd be interested as well.

The Thermomax Solar Water heating technology is the most developed of all 
renewable energy systems. A Thermomax solar water heating system can provide a 
large portion of household hot water demand depending on local climate 
conditions and the size of system. 

Thermomax collector tube is a closed chamber (Heat Pipe) consisting of a small 
amount of heat transfer liquid (Methanol). The heat pipe employs an 
evaporating-condensing cycle, absorbing heat from the Sun, using this heat to 
evaporate the liquid (latent heat) and then releasing latent heat by reverse 
transformation (condensation) at a heat sink. Thermomax collector tube has
inherent protection from freezing or overheating, a common problem with all 
"flat-plate" collector. The collector efficiency remains high even at low light, 
so output is directly related to total global radiation from the sky, and is 
predictable.

The solar space heating operates like a radian heating system. A double coil 
tank (a water tank with two heat exchangers) serves as water heater and heat 
distributor. Through a circulation pump and first coil the solar energy heats 
the water in the tank. A thermostat calls for heat in a particular zone and the 
thermal energy is delivered through the second coil. The water in the tank
provides the household hot water demand.  

Energy requirement to heat a swimming pool depends on the surface area of the 
pool. In general you may need one Thermomax tube for every 3-5 sq. ft. pool 
surface. You may consider combining the pool heating and space heating together.

find it very convenient to just cut up a few jars   
worth of fruit and stick them in the solar oven for   
a few hours unattended.  That way canning isn't such   
a hassle.

Canning Fruits in a Solar Box Cooker 
 
If I could use my solar oven for only one thing, it   
would be for canning," says Eleanor Shimeall. 
"Processing in a solar cooker is much simpler than   
conventional methods. It takes me about 10 
minutes of preparation time starting from a bowl of   
fresh fruit to placing the jar in the cooker. An 
added bonus is that the benign heat of the sun does   
not destroy the jewel-like colors of the fruit." 
 
Eleanor is such an advocate of solar canning that   
she has been giving demonstrations "in the field" 
without benefit of kitchen facilities. She has also   
included a chapter on this subject in her book, 
Eleanor's Solar Cookbook. 
 
She says she uses canning jars or jars such as those   
used by commercially prepared spaghetti sauce, 
which have a rubber ring bonded into the inside of   
the screw-on cap. 
 
Eleanor uses the "terminal sterilization" method:   
begin with clean glass jars and lids, add the fruit   
or 
tomatoes, dry sugar or salt, and water to fill up to   
the neck of the jar. You must leave space for 
expansion of the contents during cooking. Screw lids   
onto the jars as tightly as you can and place 
them into the solar cooker. Once the contents of the   
jar boils out from under the lid, the jar and 
contents are sterilized. 
 
Lids with a rubber ring are made to release steam   
during canning. Once the correct temperature has 
been reached, the contents of the jar will boil and   
flow under the tightly screwed-on lid. Remove the 
jars one-by-one as each one boils over. Wipe clean,   
set aside away from drafts to cool down slowly. As   
the jar cools, the lid is pulled downward to form a   
vacuum seal. Check each cool jar to make sure it is   
sealed properly by hitting it with a spoon and   
listening for a clear ringing note, or gently press   
down on the lid making sure it doesn't move up and   
down. If a jar did not seal, add more liquid or   
another tomato and reprocess. The quality will not   
be impaired. 
 
Solar canning is safe for acid foods only. Acid   
foods are fruits and tomatoes, or their juice, jams, 
jellies. DO NOT CAN MEATS OR VEGETABLES IN YOUR   
SOLAR COOKER!!! Don't even add a sprig of parsley as   
botulism can grow on any non-acid food!

A few weeks ago there were several articles posted about
solar water distillation as a way of providing clean
drinking water in the developing world.  Please note that
most water in the developing world is merely biologically
contaminated and distillation is not necessary.

A simpler process which kills all bacteria, viruses, and
parasites that cause disease in humans is called
pasteurization.  This is the heating of water to 149 degrees
F, (65 degrees C) for about 6 minutes, or to higher
temperatures for a shorter time.  It is not necessary
to boil the water as many people believe.  Depending on the
method of pasteurization, pasteurization requires only 1%
to 5% the energy that distillation requires.

While a graduate student at Berkeley I worked with Solar
Cookers Int'l and Pax World Service to develop a series of
solar water pasteurizers.  Information about the devices
