Bill,

A lot of gardeners are generous, and will send things for the cost of
the postage and an envelope. Or you can buy a few packages of fairly
rare seeds and exchange those to begin with. This is perhaps not
exactly the ideal that some of the old SSE group would espouse, but it
works to get you started. I would look at a company that offers fairly
sizeable packets for a reasonable price. Ideas are Harvest Moon Seeds
or Seeds from Italy. Both of these companies offer a slew of desirable
varieties at pretty good prices.
