Remediation Academies at Leesville Road High

By Stephen Gainey

Due to our staff's goal of promoting continual improvement with regard to student performance, new “remediation academies” were implemented this year in relation to four courses that have End-of-Course (EOC) tests at the end of each semester:  Geometry, Civics & Economics, Biology, and U.S. History.  One academy session for each course is scheduled for every week of the school year.  Geometry and Civics & Economics sessions are held on Tuesdays; whereas, the Biology and U.S. History sessions take place on Thursdays.  The time period for each academy session is 2:30-

3:30 p.m.

Teachers currently teaching the previously identified courses on our campus run the academies.  The sessions primarily are geared towards End-of-Course (EOC) test preparation.  To be more specific, the teachers' efforts focus on the reinforcement of Standard Course of Study objectives covered in their classes up to that point in the semester.  Teachers also use results from weekly benchmark assessments in their classes to guide the development of their lesson plans for the academy sessions.

Any student enrolled in Geometry, Civics & Economics, Biology, or U.S. History during the current semester is eligible to attend that particular course's academy.  However, one major group to be focused on by staff members with regard to our recruiting efforts is students with an average of 80 or less in one of the identified courses.  Nonetheless, no student will be denied the opportunity to attend an academy session for a particular course.

Overall, this program is designed to give students additional opportunities to prepare for these courses' End-of-Course (EOC) tests throughout the entire semester beyond the regular classroom instruction provided on a daily basis.  Thus, it is important that all parents encourage their children to take advantage of these academies.  Regardless of whether or not a child is doing well in one of these classes, he/she should take advantage of these opportunities for extra reinforcement of a course's material.  An after-school activity bus runs at approximately 4:00 p.m. on the academy days to all parts of our school zone for any student in need of transportation.
