Here's a list of software recommended for use at UNC CH. Please keep in mind these are just recommendations based on personal experience.
Peripherals
- Griffen makes video and USB/ADB adapters
- Looking for a display? Try Monster Monitors
- Powerbook users should check out PowerBook VSTech for peripherals, like battery chargers and auto adapters.
Processor Upgrades
In general I don't recommend processor upgrades--remember that unless the bottleneck you're dealing with is in the CPU, they may not help as much as you'd think, and it's alway fun to get another computer (not to mention you can generally make someone happy by donating your old one). That being said, here are some places to look.
PC, PCI, and Bus Expansion
- For USB/Firewire, go to Orange Micro
- Need more slots? Look to Magma for solutions, I've used them, nice stuff!
- MCE has hardware (including Firewire) for your PowerBook
- Formac make high end graphics boards, virtual reality addons, and video hardware
Networking Hardware
- Farallon and Asante both make a wide range of network products for the Mac.
- Team ASA makes FDDI and Gige interfaces for Macintosh.
Used and Older Hardware
Hardware Overclocking
Not recommended for the faint of heart, but if you're good with a soldering iron, want some extra speed, and don't mind voiding your warranty.....
