Dr. Cathy Packer

Dr. Ruth Walden

     Dr. Packer began her career as a newspaper reporter, working at The High Point (N.C.) Enterprise and The Charlotte (N.C.) News.  Her full-time teaching career began at Boston College in 1983, and she joined the UNC-CH faculty in 1998.  She teaches media law to both undergraduate and graduate students, and recently created a new course, “The Law and Ethics of Cyberspace.” She also has taught newswriting and reporting classes.
     Dr. Packer is the author of the book Freedom of Expression in the American Military:  A Communication Modeling Analysis.  She also is the author of a chapter, “Confidential Sources & Information,” in a textbook, Communication and the Law.  She is the co-editor and an author of The North Carolina Media Law Handbook, and she has published articles in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and Mass Comm Review.
     She is one of the School’s most enthusiastic Tar Heel basketball fans and prefers camping in the Rockies to grading papers.

 

     Dr. Walden is the director of Graduate Studies and serves on the School's Graduate Admissions committee. She is the author of Mass Communication Law in North Carolina and several book chapters, has published articles in Journalism & Mass Communication Monographs, Journalism Educator, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, COMM/ENT, and Hastings Journal of Communication and Entertainment Law. Her research interests are mass communication law and First Amendment theory.
