Media law students at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication can take several related courses in the School and elsewhere on campus:

Censorship (JOMC 144)
This course is taught by Professor Chuck Stone, the renowned journalist and author. This course examines the history, sociology and jurisprudence surrounding censorship.

Freedom of Expression (JOMC 160)
This course is taught by Dr. Margaret Blanchard, a Pulitzer Prize nominee and the author of several books on freedom of expression. The course's major premise is that freedom of expression, the cornerstone of all other American freedoms, is truly available to all only when it can be based on full information and only when it is available to those most obnoxious to the majority.

American Constitutional History to 1876 (HIST 157)
American Constitutional History Since 1876 (HIST 158)

These courses are taught by Dr. John Semonche, a professor in UNC's history department and an expert in American legal and constitutional history. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled "Speak No Evil: Sin, Sex and Censorship From Comstock to Helms," and has also agreed to edit the legal papers of James Iredell, an early Supreme Court Justice.

Seminar in Internet Policies and Future Initiatives (ILS 310)
This course is taught by Professor Paul Jones, who claims he is often mistaken for other unreconstructed relics of the failed social policies of the Sixties. This course examines emerging Internet policy issues such as copyright, intellectual property, privacy, and security and explores emerging Internet tools and applications.

Cyberspace Law (LAW 357C)
This course is taught by Professor Laura Gasaway, director of the UNC Law Library and an intellectual property professor. There are three goals for this course: to help students understand substantive law, engage in team work and learn to use presentation technology.
