After the crust warms up from the heat emerging from the interior, then the water below the ground will be warmer than the average yearly temperature. Therefore, there will be no cold springs during the long inter-glacial periods, and only the high mountains will be snow-covered.

The coming climate will be more uniformly warm and arid. There are of course other factors that influence the climate, among which are atmospheric carbon-dioxide content, the ozone layer, and earth’s magnetic field that controls the ionized layers above the atmosphere, but the long range trend is determined by the earth’s crust.

The graph on the right shows the lingering cooling effect due to decompression of the earth’s crust. If the crust were not cooled during the mountain formation, then the temperature would be uniformly increasing from the surface toward the center of the earth. The measured temperature, however, actually drops below the surface because presently the crust is still not warmed up to the equilibrium condition.

These changes in temperature and weather will certainly influence biological evolution. The dinosaurs were the result of the long interglacial periods, beginning with Triassic, continued through Jurassic, and ending at the end of Cretaceous, when a climatic change caused their extinction.

In view of these facts, we should appreciate that we live presently in a very favorable geological time. The great upheavals with accompanying severe earthquakes have subsided, yet the landscape is still varied. The glaciers have retreated, but we still have lakes and cool water. The up-welling in the formation of new mountains also blessed us with a variety of easily accessible ores.
