Subject: {Collins} Re: R-388 VFO alignment

Hi again, Rex,

Aligning the R-388 PTO is tedious, but actually easier to do than to
describe! The same technique will work with nearly all Collins PTOs,
although others have different frequency ranges.

First, assuming the 70E-15 PTO is already out of the radio, remove the 2
1/2' metal mounting disk in front of the tubes, V001, and the hex cap over
the spread coil adjustment. Make sure that the lock collar on the little
shaft inside is loose, and that the little shaft can be turned (not always
easy)-be gentle- you definitely don't want to damage the shaft! Replace
V001 and its shield, but not the metal disk. Of course you must do the
alignment with dubious capacitors/resistors replaced, high emission 6BA6s
and tube shields installed, lubrication completed, and with the PTO coil
cover screwed firmly in place. Remove, carefully clean, and reinstall the
little tensioned grounding spring riding on the PTO shaft: it must make
good electrical contact with the shaft!

Now make a jig so that you can determine when you have rotated the shaft
exactly 1 turn and exact multiples of 1 turn. There are lots of ways to do
it, but I solder a 1" piece of wire to a solder lug and fasten the lug to
the standoff supporting the 2 1/2" disc on the front of the PTO (between
the tubes), so that the wire stands up vertically. Glue a 3" dia. cardboard
disc with a 1/4" hole in the middle to a little knob with a setscrew that
you can fasten to the PTO shaft. Make an index mark on the edge of the
disc, and set the vertical wire index just behind the disc, with the end
bent over the edge of the disc to sit in front of the index mark.

Hook up the PTO to +150VDC (regulated) and 6VAC, let it warm up at least 30
min, then check that the PTO output waveform with a scope-it should be a
very clean sine wave with no erratic jumps or spikes in the trace as you
turn the PTO through its range. Don't try to align the PTO if it isn't
working properly!

Attach a frequency counter to the PTO coax and set the PTO frequency to 2.5
MHz, the middle of the PTO's 3-2 MHz range. Lock the knob and attached
cardboard disk to the shaft with the setscrew so that the disk index mark
lines up with the index wire, and the counter reads exactly 2500.0 kHz. Now
turn the knob and shaft exactly 5 turns clockwise, record the readings at
each turn (100 kHz interval), then 10 turns counterclockwise and record the
reading at each turn. If the PTO alignment is perfect you'll get 2,000.0
and 3000.0 as your end readings and each full turn will change the
frequency by exactly 100 kHz.
Since your PTO is probably not perfect, you will see your tracking error at
each of the 10 points as a reading slightly greater or less than exact
multiples of 100 kHz.

Reset to 2500.0, remove the knob and disc, and turn the spread coil (L002)
shaft an eighth turn clockwise, reinstall the knob and shaft to align with
the index wire at exactly 2500.0 kHz. Re-check your endpoints. If they are
closer to 2000.0 and 3000.0 than before, you're going in the right
direction, if they're farther off from exactly 10 turns equaling exactly
1000 kHz, turn the spread coil shaft a quarter turn counterclockwise, reset
to 2500, and repeat the endpoint measurements. Seeing how much (what
percentage) of the PTO tracking error an eighth turn in the spread coil
shaft cancels will tell you how much the shaft needs to be turned to
completely cancel the spread error. The response to adjustment of the
spread coil is fairly linear. After each spread coil adjustment the knob
and disk MUST be reset so that the wire aligns at exactly 2500.0 kHz.
Repeat this sequence until exactly 10 turns gives exactly 1000 kHz
frequency change.

It's very important to appreciate that turning the spread coil shaft
changes BOTH the spread (kHz/turn) and the absolute frequency. This is why
you must loosen the knob on the shaft and re-align the index mark on the
disk with the wire at 2500.0 after each spread coil adjustment.

You should be able to get the ends (+/- exactly 5.00 turns) to track within
+/- 2 kHz of the center of 2500.0. A good PTO will have range ends within
+/-1 kHz of the centre. Starting from 2500, one endpoint may be slightly
farther out than the other: you need to go for the best fit.
After setting the 2000, 2500, and 3000 kHz points you may notice a small
remaining error that varies in an uneven fashion as you move across the
range. This can only be corrected by readjusting the stack of metal shims
that the coil guide rollers run on in the PTO can: you really don't want to
go there! In most PTOs this error is less than 1 kHz/100 kHz, and isn't
worth worrying about.
There is one situation in which you might want to touch those shims: if the
range is very asymmetric, for example 2000 and 2500 are dead on (5.00
turns), while 5.00 turns above 2500 gives you 3007 instead of 3000. In that
case you would adjust the shims toward the rear of the PTO-replacing the
can after each adjustment, and probably spend another 4 hours in tedious
trial and error for best fit!

Instead of struggling with re-tightening the locking collar on the spread
coil shaft, I put a tiny dab of RTV silicone sealant from the shaft to the
wall: it's much easier to remove if you ever need to do this again. Leave
the hex plug off until the sealant has cured-you don't want to seal acetic
acid vapors into the PTO!

Reinstall the VFO set to 2500 kHz, leave the setscrews loose on the
coupling, and set the MHz dial to 7.0 MHz, kHz dial on the radio to 0, and
the fiducial line to the center of the window. Put the crystal calibrator
on, set the (hopefully calibrated) BFO to center frequency, and carefully
adjust the PTO shaft to give the zero beat with the fiducial line on 0.
Tighten the coupling, check the kHz knob for smooth operation, and tune
across the dial. The 100kHz cal points should now fall on the kHz dial 0,
+/- the small remaining error you couldn't remove.

After 50 years these PTOs are pretty well stabilized and seem hold their
re-alignments very well. I have the measurements on an R-388 I did in 1983
and it's not changed at all since!
Courage!

Subject: {Collins} The newbie is back...coupla questions

Hello everyone:

Some of you may remember that I posted some elementary q's in the last
little while about advice on this S-line I was thinking about
buying..... brought it home yesterday and just getting started......
playing around with the 75S-3 first. 32S-1 will come later; I think I
am going to replace the power cables on the P/S first.

On the 75S-3: I think I've read about this somewhere..... there seems
to be an excessive amount of 60 Hz hum in the speaker...normal, or is
there an accepted fix?

Also, as I suspected the CW filter is missing, and I'm thinking about
putting the rig back into its original shipping condition, not that I
really need the filter anyway,.... but anyone out there know what the
correct part number is, and where I can find one of these??

I have a filter which I think is for the 75S-3 but I am not sure what it =
is for.

Numbers on the filter are 526-7466-009 and 293-1127-00

the filter is rectangle with 2 pins at each end that looks like it =
pluges into a xtal socket with a screw lug just inside of the two pins.

I hope some one out there knows what it is.

Subject: {Collins} Re: R-388 VFO alignment

In my opinion, correcting tracking errors using the shims is not all that difficult if you keep the following in mind:

1. Place 4 index marks on the disk so you can check tracking every quarter turn (25 kHz) Take care to place these accurately.

2. You don't need to reinstall the can completely each time you make an adjustment. You have to put it in place, but you don't need to fasten it. Watch the counter to confirm this. It's probably best to remove the O-ring, which you'll probably want to replace anyway.

3. By all means, don,t start this if you think you might be interrupted.

4. Don't loosen the clamping screw more than necessary to let you move the shims.

5. Start at one end. With the can in place, read the counter. Remove the can, adjust only the shims which are under the roller, replace the can to check. Repeat until you're within 200 Hz or so, then turn thr shaft 1/4 turn and repeat, remembering that the frequency should now be 25 kHz higher (or lower). Continue until you've done all 41 points. Don't forget to tighten the clamp screw when you're done.

Once you've done a few points, it goes surprisingly fast. It took me less than an hour, and the total tracking error has been 300 Hz or less ever since.

If you're replacing the O-ring, use Neoprene or other material which is compatible with petroleum products. These rings are available at bearing shops for a few bucks. Grease it lightly before assembly.

Congratulations on making the move Chris and buying your classic Collins =
S-line! =20

No, there shouldn't be any 60 hz hum in the speaker. High voltage =
capacitors are usually the problem. I haven't had to replace mine in =
the 75S3B yet. I don't recall if the HV cap is a chassis mounted can or =
caps under the chassis. I don't seem to recall a can on the chassis. =
Its my firm belief that there's no such thing as a good old electrolytic =
cap, just bad ones and ones going bad, so I'm not surprised to hear =
about hum. My suggestion is to open up the receiver, find out the =
physical size of the originals, find out the values from the manual, =
order some replacements from Mouser at www.mouser.com

I have a couple of Collins receivers that have way too much hum and need =
the HV's replaced. My 75A1 is totally down due to hum. My 75A4 is =
fully functional but I've been meaning to replace the HV caps for a =
couple of years :) About 3 years ago one of the HV sections of a three =
section can went bad. I snipped the wire off and put a new hv axial cap =
below the chassis. Short term problem solved, long term problem still =
there. There's two other sections that are functional but probably =
going bad. Since I'm on a roll, my 30L1 is totally down due to bad =
electrolytics. The HV dropped to 800 or 900 volts. Several of the HV =
caps have the vents ruptured. Darn electrolytics. So I have to order =
some new replacements and replace all of them.=20

Hello:
I have the following KWM-380 parts for sale:

1 - Collins KWM-380 Performance Modification Parts Kit. These are the parts needed to install the Collins Modifications for the 380. The kit contains most of the parts, with the exception of the WARC Frequency Modification Kit and the Audio Low Pass Filter Kit. New $50.00 plus shipping.

1 - AC-3801 Noise Blanker Board. I bought this board from Surplus Sales of Nebraska a few years ago. They sold them as 90% complete, with some missing parts. The missing parts seem to be the Noise Blanker Carrier Plate and the connecting cables. Comes with circuit diagrams and installation instructions. New $50.00 plus shipping.

Thanks for your interest.

It finally happened! My faithful 516F-2 power supply smoked (still trying
to get the smoke smell out of the house)! The burned part appears to be the
lower of the two chokes which are mounted one over the other on the right
rear of the chassis. They are listed as "L1 and L2" on the schematic and
have a part number of 668-0300-000.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have a set of these, or who
can suggest a source/part number for these. I also figure on replacing the
caps as long as I'm into it.

Thank you,

Hello to all.

I just help a friend install a 30L1 with his Yaesu FT1000.

He is getting much better signal reports transmitting with the
amplifier on than without out it…. However,

He has two concerns.

The amplifiers cabinet gets very hot (temperature wise) to the touch
after being in use for a while. Is this normal?

On receive, it appears that once he turns the amplifier on the receiving
signals attenuate (he said in a particular case on 20 mts. from an S9
+10 to an S 8)
Any thoughts?

Will appreciate any comments.

Subject: {Collins} Re: 30L1 heat.

The heat is pretty normal, since, as I recall, there is no blower fan.
It would be excessive if the amp is not properly resonated, of course.

The signal loss would imply that the antenna relay is energized all the
time, once power is applied. I would suggest unhooking the amplifier
keying line to the FT1000 and seeing if this affects things. The FT1000
requires an external keying relay to safely operate the older linear
amplifiers and it is quite possible he has shorted out the internal
linear amplifier keying circuit in the FT1000.

Gary

PS: This could offer insight into why the amp runs hotter than
expected. If the amp is always keyed, even on receive, then it would
tend to operate much hotter than it would with rest periods during
receive since it draws plate current but puts out no signal. It is
simply dissipating the plate current as heat.

There is a blower fan inside the 30L-1. It is small and probably inadequate
for extended key down sessions so some heat is indeed generated. That is
probably why one sees so many of the final compartment covers discolored.

Subject: {Collins} 32S-1 Mods....advice?

Well, after negotiating a pretty good deal on my first S-line, (early 32S-1, 75S-3 and extremely clean... chassis is still bright, etc), it's time to have a real look under the hood and see how
40+ years in who-knows-how-many-shacks has played with the internals.

Here's my specific request for advice: does anyone know of a legit mod to the 32S-1 whereby one would add an extra tube ????. Here's what I see when looking down with the hood up: a 12AU7 very
nicely integrated where the serial number label is supposed to be right smack in the middle of the chassis.! Also right beside the tube is a pot with a long shaft and knob. I have not examined
beyond this simple observation...

Rig seems to tune up fine and puts out power.

Subject: {Collins} Re: 30L1 heat.

Jose,

The Collins 30L1 runs quite warm even when in idling mode. Just the heat=20
generated by the 811A filaments adds up to quite a heat load. There is a fa=
n=20
in the 30L1 but, in my opinion at least, it is barely adequate. That may ha=
ve=20
been a concious decision by the designers in order to minimize costs and ke=
ep=20
moisture out of the unit in less than desirable environments.=20

Many 30L1 users add external fans to help the situation. The use of compute=
r=20
muffin fans is quite common. There have been numerous debates on whether th=
e=20
fans should be situated to blow heat into the unit or pull air out of the=20
unit. The proponents of both methods have good reasons for each so you wil=
l=20
have to decide whether you want to use external fans, where to put them, an=
d=20
how to use them.=20

I personally use two 12 volt, series-wired, 4 inch muffin fans on top of th=
e=20
cabinet pulling air up out of the unit. My reasons for this arrangement are
	1. the two fans wired in series turn slower when wired to my 12v supply. T=
his=20
generates less noise but moves plenty of air.
	2. hot air rises so I figured I would work with nature and give the=
=20
hot air an assist.
	3. It seemed to me that there is less dust under the cabinet to be pulled =
up=20
than dust in the air above to be blown down. Hopefully this keeps the cabin=
et=20
cleaner but I would recommend an annual cleaning at least.

If you use muffin fans on top of the cabinet I would suggest getting some w=
ith=20
protective grills. All Electronics carries these I believe.

If you are getting signal drops when the 30L1 is turned on then it sounds a=
s=20
if something is happening with the transmit/receive relay in the amp. Could=
=20
your keying lead be wired wrong? Is your rig capable of handling the voltag=
e=20
from the 30L1? It is about 170v if I remember correctly. Most newer=20
transceivers won't handle this. I use a reed relay keyed by my transceiver =
to=20
actually key the amp. If the contacts on the reed relay burn up it is easy =
to=20
replace it. I mounted it in a little black plastic case from Radio Shack an=
d=20
just sit it behind the rig. If you want you can put a little SPST switch in=
=20
the box to use as a standby/operate switch for the amp.

Let us know what you find and what you decide about the cooling.

One can debate whether or not the heat build-up in the 30L-1 is detrimental.
Many units go for decades without a tube change.

I personally like the security of disappating the heat. An excellent answer to
this problem is the so-called Boat Anchor Cooler produced by Carl, K4ZRD. He
produces an attractive DC power supply that comes with two muffin fans with
rubber feet to place on top of your cabinet. Several more muffin fans can be
run off the same supply. They are very quietand virtually military grade
construction. They can be ordered through his web site at K4ZRD.COM. Several
pictures of the unit are on the site.

For the record, here is some more information I believe to be correct:

The set screws used in the 75A-4 main tuning knob are: 1/8 inch 3-48's.
(from: "Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 20:14:01 -0800

The diameter of the spline socket normally found in #3 set screws is 0.048
inch.
The diameter of the spline socket normally found in #4 set screws is 0.060
inch.
Spline keys in both these sizes are made in both four- and six- flute
varieties. (I do not know which is found in the 75A-4.)
(From: )

Xcelite part #99-61 appears to be six sided with diameter 0.048 inch.
Xcelite part #99-62 appears to be six sided with diameter 0.060 inch.
(From: )

Xcelite Bristol spline screwdriver set part #99PS60 appears to have spline
wrenches from diameter 0.048 to 0.183 inch, but I do not know whether the
smaller sizes are four or six sided or one of each.
(From:
)

So I am left with the following questions:

Is the 75A-4 Reduction tuning knob equipped with #3 or #4 set screws?

are the set screws four-or six-sided?

What screws are to be found in recently manufactured reproductions of the knob?

Hi Ron,
The preferred way to download a manual or a section of a manual from the
CCA website is to right click on the file. A drop down menu will come up
with a "Save Target As" choice. Click on that then another screen will come
up asking where you want to save the file to. What this is doing is saving
the file to your hard drive where you can open it later with Acrobat and
read it or print it. To open these files online you need a really fast
connection and a bunch of memory in your p/c. Please give this a try and let
me know how it worked. If you still have problems I will see what else we
can do.
Thanks!

hello radioers;
i must admit that i know next to nothing about radio but i used to listen sometimes when my neighbor would be talking to his ham buddies.so to get to the point when he died about 6 months ago at age 87 his collins 75a-3 came to me. we listened to it about 5 years ago when he was still able to maintain his antenna network which has since been attacked by bushes, trees and fallen limbs. anyway i was going to try to hook it up but the more i read about antennas the more confused and bewildered i became. so i think that someone who can operate and appreciate this instrument should have it. i checked out the net and find that $450.00 should be a fair price. as far as i can tell it is a 1953 model with original instruction book. it has a coax connection and a 148-c adapter. about 4 1/2 years ago my neighbor whose name was johnie collins ask me to disconnect the antenna and set the radio up on a shelf where it lived until three weeks ago. i don't know anymore about it but if you hav
e questions i will try to answer them. thank you.

Heat rises - it makes more sense to draw hot air out. Otherwise you are
blowing hot air
from the tubes down over all the components under the chassis. By
drawing hot
air out the top, everything stays cool!

Hello Every one.
My transceiver is now giving me a little problem with the ALC control, when I short the PTT or key the rig, the alc meter goes high for around 1 to 2 seconds and then return to 0 causing a delay in power up. I have measure the alc rest voltage and is -1.05V, with the key or ptt reach -3.5 to -5 ( with the delay) and then change again to around -1 with no modulation. After the delay time the alc function works fine and the power is reflected with modulation. I check the R-119 timing resistor and the value looks OK. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Ben,

Peter Dahl (www.pwdahl.com) can supply a new transformer and both chokes,
but they are very expensive. Or, if you have the old ones, he can rewind
them (not quite as expensive). His new transformers and chokes are allegedly
more rugged than the originals and, if so, should last a lifetime.

Hi Ken,

The original inlay is very thin so you employ use a thin bladed knife, small
screwdriver or other such device to pry it up. I use an X-acto hobby knife.
Don't pry at the edge, though, or you may scar the knob. Use your tool to
gently puncture the inlay near the center and peel it up. You'll find this
surprisingly easy to do, since the adhesive underneath will be little more
than powder at this point.

After cleaning off the old adhesive residue by gently scraping it away, glue
the new inlay in place with contact cement. I use a very thin layer of
Walthers Goo. It's a high grade rubber-based product favored by model
railroaders. It's readily available at hobby shops. It bonds unlike
materials extremely tightly and well and does not crystallize with age.
Since it remains flexible, your new inlay can be replaced with relative
ease in the future. Apply it sparingly; it is not necessary to coat the
entire inside surface of the inlay. Just a "dot" or two will suffice.

New knob inlays certainly do dress up a rig. They look great! Applying them
is just about the easiest and most economical refurbishing step you can
take.

Ken..... the method I have used successfully several times is to drill a
small hole in the center of the aluminum disk, then use a sharp object like
a dental pic to pry up the aluminum disk so you can grab it with a long nose
pliers and pull it up and out. it may separate and come out in more than
one piece, but that's no problem,

DO NOT attempt to pry it out at the edges....... you will likely damage the
knob and that is not good.

Clean up the cavity to make it smooth and use a rubber base cement.....
don't use Crazy Glue or Super Glue..... as it may let the disk pop out
sometime later.

This method has worked well for me several years.

Hi Ron -

I use a standard (non-amplified) D104 with my 32V2 with great results. I
played with a small handful of other mics, but the D104 sounds best. Also,
other 32V transmitters I hear on the air using D104's sound great to
me. Its a hard to beat combination!

Hello Bob and fellow Collins enthusiasts,
I did some research on the FEDLOG, and the Collins PN: 972-1353-00 has a CP
CLARE PN: A257144 with a NSN 5945-00-773-3394. No telling when the
government last procured this part but it did show acquisition at $29.28.
Army, Air Force and Navy all used this part somewhere, most likely in a
piece of Collins equipment. The Clare PN: A-95183 did not cross. Since I
don't have this piece of equipment nor the manual, perhaps a picture would
enlighten the group. I take it that this may be an open frame type of relay,
since the early model KWM-2A's had those.
I've got thousands of new and used relays, but not enough time to inspect
each one. So, a picture is really necessary. I did find this stock number
listed out on PARTS BASE with two companies showing 1 each on their listing.
The A-257144 also showed up on Google at a company that sells parts. Pretty
steep price $138.95 with one in stock. It may be possible to repair your
relay depending on its construction. Hopefully one of us can help toward a
solution.

If all else fails, take a large electrolytic capacitor
(the higher the capacity the better) and attach a
couple of insulated leads to it. Then charge it up.
Next, connect the leads to the terminals of the relay
coil (make sure that you don't touch the conductor
portion of the leads). Many times this will cause an
"arc" inside the coil where the winding has broken and
will actually "weld" the wire back together. If so,
then your coil should work fine. If not, then you
haven't lost anything!

Ira,

Because if you don't the additional thickness of the new overlay will=20
eliminate the "reveal" between the knob and insert and one can feel the=20
edge of the added overlay. Better to remove the old which is really very=20
easy and takes about 10-seconds.

Bob and Glen,

Prior to moving from the Chicago area to Corn Country a few years ago, I
would patrol the few remaining "junque and surplus" outlets left around
there to see what they had. Over the years, I acquired a number of relays
- many different styles and coil ratings - that were distributed by a
company named Relay Service Company. They are (were) located either in
Chicago or the surrounding area. Their products were always inexpensive
(why else would I buy them?) and worked fine. Although I never knew for
sure, my guess was, and still is, that Relay Service took in used or
surplus relays and "remanufactured" them. Anyway, in most cases, the
contact stacks looked absolutely brand new on the ones I bought. I recall
that at one time, I saw an ad for Relay Service in one of the electronic
trade rags and received a catalog from them via the bingo card route.

So, for whatever it may be worth, you might want to check on-line or via
the Internet Yellow Pages to see if Relay Service is still around and if
they might have an exact replacement.
