Title: ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE AND WORK GROUP PERFORMANCE

Abstract: Organization structure is defined as the overall pattern of task division among work groups and the corresponding arrangements for integration, that result in contingent relationships between task capacities and task requirements. The theory that variations in structure are associated with effectiveness differentials at the work group level of the organization is tested using survey data collected from members of a large research library. Factor analysis of the questionnaire data is the basis for construction of multi-item scales, also submitted to reliability analysis. Individual scores are averaged to produce a work group score. Analysis of variance for scores on the effectiveness variables, Group Performance and Adaptability, yield significant F ratios on most of the pairings of structural contingencies: Programmability and Formalization Emphasis, Cooperation Requirements and Intra-Group Coordination, Cooperation Requirements and Initiation of Structure, Cooperation Requirements and Stratification, Complexity and Intra-Group Coordination, Complexity and Initiation of Structure, Complexity and Stratification. Results for the Autonomy and Inter-Group Coordination and the Influence and Inter-Group Coordination contingencies are inconclusive. The findings are discussed as diagnostics for organization design decisions or organization development interventions. The theoretical and analytical approaches employed in this study added confirmation to the assumption that consonance between aspects of organization structure impacts work group performance. Both the concepts and the methodology employed in this study could serve as the basis for further research in several suggested directions.
