Title: CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH MATERIALS USED BY AMERICAN LITERATURE SCHOLARS: A CITATION STUDY

Abstract: Citation studies have been conducted in a number of disciplines, primarily in the sciences and the social sciences, but relatively few studies have been conducted in the humanities. Since the nature of research and of the use of research materials is different in the humanities from that in the sciences and social sciences, citation analysis offers the opportunity to examine research practices of humanities scholars and particularly of American literature scholars. This study focused on the area of American literature and described the characteristics of the research materials used by scholars writing in the broad subject area.

In order to obtain source items of various forms (monographs, journal articles, chapters and essays in collections, and dissertations), the American literature section of the 1981 MLA International Bibliography was sampled. Since citation studies conducted in the humanities show that researchers tend to cite monographs more frequently than journals, it was determined that the source items should be comprised of more than just journal articles. The sampling procedure produced a population of source items which was in proportion (with regard to form of material) to the works published in the discipline in the year 1981.

Among the characteristics analyzed in this study were the form of the cited materials (monographs, periodicals, etc.), the class of materials (primary or secondary), the categorization of citing function (the authorial uses of the materials), the age of the cited materials, the language of the cited materials, and the subject of the cited materials (American literature, other literatures, other humanities, social sciences and sciences). In addition, the study identified the most frequently cited monographic and periodical titles and compared these lists with selective lists. The institutional affiliations and academic ranks of the citing authors were also analyzed with relation to the above-mentioned characteristics of the cited materials.
