Title: INFORMATION NEED AND THE FUNCTION OF THE QUESTION

Abstract: The role of the question in establishing the information need of individuals is studied within the context of cognitive theory. The hypothesis investigated relates the number and kind of questions asked to the extent of the need of the individual to be "informed." The hypothesis is based on concepts generated by Churchman, Debons and others which relate information to inquiry and cognitive functioning respectively. The experiments indicated a trend to decreasing questioning activity with increased data input. Although the findings relate to "closed system" problem, the study does indicate that the question is an important instrument with which to measure information needs. Refinement in methodology to expand understanding of the role of the question and information need is suggested.
