Title: A SYSTEMATIC DESIGN OF A PROPOSED MODEL FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER PROGRAMS IN SAUDI ARABIA

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate, assess, and analyze the present condition of secondary and comprehensive school libraries; to investigate and determine the attitudes of secondary and comprehensive school principals toward school library media center programs; and to design a model that could be regarded as a general guide for developing school library media center programs in Saudi Arabia.

The survey research method was the research technique used to collect data in this study. Two instruments were used: questionnaires and supplemental interviews. The statistical techniques used in analyzing the data collected included frequencies, percentages, central tendency, and the t-test.

The conclusions of this study were: (1) the concept of the school library media center program as an essential element in the secondary and comprehensive school program does not presently exist in the education system in Saudi Arabia; (2) school libraries do not play an important role in the teaching, learning, and the curriculum of the secondary and comprehensive schools; and (3) most secondary and comprehensive school principals have positive attitudes towards school library media center programs.

The major findings of this study were: (1) Most library media personnel had work experience in libraries between 1-5 years. Eleven per cent of the library media personnel had library qualifications. (2) Sixty-six per cent of the library media personnel were teacher-librarians, whereas, twenty-three per cent of the school library media personnel have been acting as librarians. (3) Most school libraries lacked non-print materials and equipment. (4) The majority of secondary and comprehensive school libraries lacked adequate and appropriate print and non-print materials for teachers, staff, and students. (5) The majority of principals expressed positive comments about the need for a library media center in every school. (6) There was no significant difference in attitudes toward school library media center programs between principals who had bachelor degrees as compared with principals who had advanced degrees. (7) The analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation (ADIE) proposed model was designed to be a guide for school library media program development for Saudi Arabia.
