Title: DEVELOPMENT OF INDIAN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES SINCE 1800 AND CONTRIBUTION OF DR. S. R. RANGANATHAN: A CRITICAL STUDY

Abstract: Indian higher education and academic libraries have changed considerably in the 1980's and are very different from those of pre-independence India. Since 1800, the libraries have developed and served the academic institutions in their own rights. The development has been made possible due to many factors including the progress of higher education, support of the University Grants Commissions after independence, and the guidance of many librarians including that of the late Dr. S. R. Ranganathan.

The study in this dissertation is a three-fold study. It deals with the development of academic libraries, higher education since 1800, and the contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan to the academic libraries of India. It is divided into seven chapters and includes twenty appendices and a bibliography. The dissertation tries to answer many important questions such as: Why did academic libraries develop as they did and play an unimportant part in Indian higher education before 1924? What was Dr. Ranganathan's influence on the academic libraries and why did he emerge into such a unique position? Has the progress of academic libraries in India been adequate since independence in 1947 and how can it be measured? Are college and university libraries meeting the standards of collection development, services, professional staff, and budget etc. as set by the Library Committee of the University Grants Commission in 1959? Are the Indian academic libraries still the weakest link in higher education and what are the problems of these libraries?

The dissertation deals in detail with the developments of academic libraries and higher education since 1800, and the contributions of Dr. Ranganathan and his impact on various aspects of the academic libraries such as cataloging, classification, library education, standards and services, and the status of academic libraries and librarians. The final chapter deals with the problems of academic libraries and some possible solutions to improve them. The appendices include statistics of the collection development of selected colleges and all Indian university libraries since 1900, recommendations of different library commissions, chronology of the Indian academic libraries since 1800, and a chronology of the late Dr. S. R. Ranganathan.
