Title: An examination of how people with diverse backgrounds talk about mathematics teaching and learning face-to-face and on-line

Abstract: This dissertation is about the interaction between language and mathematics education. The purpose of the study is to explore how diverse members of the mathematics education community (in-service secondary mathematics teachers, pre-service secondary mathematics teachers, university mathematicians and university mathematics educators) talked about a multimedia case study, the "Making Weighty Decisions" (Bowers, Doerr, Masingila, & McClain, 2000) when they interacted face-to-face and online. Case discussions of 19 participants throughout several professional conversations were examined by making use of (1) computer mediated discourse analysis, a discourse analysis approach to identify patterns of structure and meaning in language use in computer-mediated communication, and (2) content analysis, a method designed for the objective, systematic, and quantitative analysis of communication (Berelson, 1952). Gender, professional category and mode of communication are the characteristics. Rate of participation and content of the communication are the critical outcomes. The dissertation is primarily based on breaking the transcripts of the case study discussions into observable and recordable units, such as postings, turns, words and themes (Berelson, 1952). Tables, figures, and graphs are the major data presentation tools.

Although the sample size constrains the extent to which the research questions concerning the participation rates of the various participants and the content of the online and face-to-face discussions can be definitively answered, an examination of the results reported in this chapter clearly shows that the multimedia case can stimulate discussions about mathematics teaching and learning among mathematics educators from diverse backgrounds. The data examined here suggest that individuals focused on topics important to mathematics education and that most participants did indeed share their opinions regarding these issues. No obvious patterns of participation related to status, gender, group membership or mode of communication were suggested by the data.
