Title: Measurement of Document Exposure Time Distributions at a Small Public Library
Abstract: The investigation explored the performance measures in a small public library using the parameters for measurement provided by the Hamburg model. The operational purpose of the inquiry was to use the Hamburg exposure time concept to evaluate the performance of a new library program that afforded no precedent, namely, a Vertical File on Microfiche (VFOM).
Other objectives of the study were to obtain the total library performance of the McKinley Memorial Library for a possible comparative analysis, to conduct a feasibility study of in-house production opposed to commercial production of the VFOM, and to determine a space savings factor relative to the reduction of hardcopy Vertical File material to a microform.
Data for the investigation were collected by the staff of the survey library during the period, 17 November 1975 through 15 December 1975, which included 25 working days. The procedures and guidelines of the model were closely followed. The concentration of the investigation was on the visitors to the reference section, visitors to the microfiche collection and circulation use.
The results of the survey discovered a cost analysis that was highly favorable, and a space savings factor that was also favorable. Comparison of the total document set opposed to the document subset, the VFOM, was found to be unfavorable, primarily due to cost rather than item use and exposure time.
