Title: New Project Apollo Beta 20100104 released
Post by: Tschachim on January 05, 2010, 01:41:10 PM
Hi Apollo fans,

Happy New Year!  :)

To begin with the obvious, another year is over and still no Project Apollo - NASSP release, which might be disappointing. However, I'm quite optimistic that we're getting there, many important steps have been completed: Both Quickstart and Virtual AGC Mode are ready for release up to Earth Orbit Insertion including complete checklists for Project Apollo Checklist MFD, all remaining phases of the Apollo 7 mission are at least possible, more details about that are in the last posts of pattersoncr in this thread: http://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/mscforum/index.php?topic=1456.0

Quickstart Mode still works as explained in the wiki (http://nassp.sourceforge.net/wiki/Apollo_7#Quickstart_mode), to watch the show in Virtual AGC mode do the following:

  • Start Orbiter, go to the "Extras" tab of the Orbiter launchpad, double-click Vessel configuration and then double-click Project Apollo Configuration.
  • Go to the "Virtual AGC Mode" tab and activate both the "Enable automatic checklist execution" and the "Slow automatic checklist execution (e.g. for demonstrations)" option.
  • Start the "Project Apollo - NASSP/Apollo 7 Virtual AGC - Launch" scenario. Choose "Start paused" if you don't want to miss the first steps.
  • Press F1, F4, choose "Custom, then "External MFD".
  • Select the "Project Apollo Checklist" MFD.
  • Press FLSH to highlight the switch of the current step if applicable (See puma's new video for an impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VDV6Gdxakc)

Enjoy the show...  :)

We'll continue testing and fixing the on-orbit and rendezvous stuff according to the flight plan and thus working towards the Apollo 7 release. Probably I'll try to do the ORDEAL. Of course, there's also a lot of work to do with tutorials and documentation in the wiki...

Now back to the usual beta business:

The new beta modules pack is available here: http://nassp.sf.net/wiki/Installation. Please make sure that Orbiter 2006-P1 and OrbiterSound 3.5 is installed. Also please make sure that you do a CVS Update of all directories, that means the Config, Doc, Meshes, Orbitersdk, Scenarios, Sound and Textures directories. A new CVS snapshot is available, too.

There's no separate Meshland module for collision support anymore, Artlav provided a new one, so please make sure that you disable the MeshLand module on the "Modules" tab of Orbiter's Launchpad. The new collision module is part of the beta modules pack, please activate the "Collision-core" module on the "Modules" tab of Orbiter's Launchpad to try it. It's a work in progress with more features than the old one, but also with new bugs, look here for more info's: http://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/mscforum/index.php?topic=1962.0

There are some new features related to Project Apollo Checklist MFD:

  • Checklist items can call other checklist (like "subroutines"), this is used by the insertion checks. Steps doing that are displayed in light blue.
  • Checklist items can be marked as "manual". That means you have to do something by yourself, which cannot be done automatically, even during automatic execution, e.g. ajust the ASCP or enter a value to the DSKY. Steps like this are displayed in yellow and you need to proceed pressing the PRO key of the MFD. This happens in Virtual AGC Mode only.
  • Some "cosmetical changes" like support of line breaks.

The Saturn IB launch autopilot has been improved and now achieves a historically more correct orbit in terms of apogee, perigee, inclination and spacecraft position at insertion. This is mainly a temporary fix until the LVDC++ work-in-progress is ready, but should be fine for release. The S-IVB on orbit stuff (LVLH attitude, venting) is coming soon...

Have fun, comments and questions are always welcome! :)

Cheers
Tschachim

Is there a problem with the CVS snapshot file? It is the same file name and size as the modules file?

... and not the 113MB file called ProjectApollo_CVS_20100104.zip?
Both files are listed here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/nassp/files/
Anyone else having that problem?  :?

Perfect timing! In the past few days I got a craving for NASSP and came on today to find a new release. Can't wait to try it out later!
