Any chance of building a 'docking tunnel' payload for the SIVb? That would allow us to simulate the first steps towards the 'Apollo to Venus' plan shown on page 110 of:

The plan seemed to be first fly a standard SIVb with the docking tunnel allowing them to access the fuel tanks after launch to prove it could be done, then fly the modified SIVb with the storage module above the fuel tanks (basically a 'wet' skylab) for orbital testing, then fly the modifed SIVb and the modified CSM (with two LEM engines rather than the SPS) to Venus.

The complete trip to Venus will require lots of extra work so it's something for the future, but the inital test flight would just need a new docking tunnel mesh and a few lines of code to implement it as a payload (see the bottom-but-one drawing on that page).

Actually, it would also need some more changes to the TLI program, as it appears the plan was to do the transposition and docking _before_ the burn that would take you out of Earth orbit: but that's not too hard to fix up either. We'd need to stick an IU into the SIVb DLL and provide a way for the CSM to talk to it.

Apparently you'd have very little time to do an abort with the CSM if there's a problem during the TVI burn to Venus, so they wanted the CSM activated and checked out before doing the burn... which required seperating it from the SIVb first. I'd guess that the 'eyeballs out' burn with the SIVb is something they'd want to try on the first Earth orbital test flight.

The docking tunnel also appears to have an EVA airlock, though it's not clear where from the diagram: unless they planned to seperate the CSM from the SIVb and use the docking tunnel itself as the airlock.

For now I've simulated the docking tunnel with the ASTP mesh, but more changes are required to allow the docked CSM to control the SIVb.

Well, I think phase A is done: it needs new meshes (and Block III/IV CSM) for B and C.

I haven't wanted to make any non-essential changes to the CSM lately as it's close to being releasable.

I'd also be interested to hear what the current progress status is, also have you seen this 1967 study (http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19670017910_1967017910.pdf) which discusses a Manned Venus Orbiter which would either have used Apollo or NERVA technology.

Well, the next phase needs new meshes and a new CSM :).

However, most of the work on the SIVB would be compatible with Skylab; we'd need an option to create a Skylab mesh with or without a J-2 engine, and to have different docking meshes on the front. If someone wants to build those meshes, then the code for that part shouldn't be hard.

Plus as discussed on the Orbiter Forum, that would also mean we could do the Lunar Skylab.

Still wondering about the progress on this mission. Thought you might be intersted in this trajectory study:

May not be much use for the flyby missions, but might be useful for the Manned Venus Orbital missions.
