Howdy folks,
Short heads-up. The ascent stage model is coming along nicely. Modelled the forward section, IMU housing on top of it has been added and the panel on the lower panel on the aft equipment bay. Next will be a lot smaller details like the RCS quads, vent hoods, antennas and many more. Sorry for the slow progress, it's because I try to build it as accurate as possible, and I am confident you won't be dissapointed.
The only thing I am concerned about is the transfer from 3ds to .msh format. I did some test already and I have some really nasty shading errors along some weird material changes or mesh component position changes on the resulting mesh in orbiter, that I partly cannot explain myself. I will try to get more experience using meshmaker 2.0, however, any suggestion on other conversion tools are welcome. Swatch, maybe you can assist me in solving some of the issues?
Thanks for listening. Greetings to you all!

My Project Apollo work in progress:
* New detailed Lunar Module Ascent stage with virtual cockpit (VC currently planned as eye candy only) 18 % done
My Project Apollo work to be continued:
* new Service Module SPS engine bell
* various Saturn V textures, exhaust textures
* SIM Bay for the SM
My long-term plans are to create a:
* New detailed Lunar Module descent stage (eventually models of all flown LM's)
* New F-1 engines for the S-1C stage showing the foil (batting) insulation
* New LUT and launch pad (if nobody else does it)

3ds to msh files is a conversion that I've never liked. I'll see what I can come up with. What program are you using?

CM Visual
-VC (~75% complete: texture work beginning again; mesh-78%; texture-70%)
Propulsion Particle Improvements (Focused on S1B right now, BETA 1.0 has been commited)
New Docking Method (~50% complete: research complete; coding partially completed, testing not underway)
Future Work: (if it's here, it's deemed unnecessary to upcoming release)
Older Work: (if it's here, it's fair game to whoever wants to improve)
EMS Implementation (committed: minor flaws, but groundwork is there, needs extensive testing)
EMS scrolls (committed: not refined, but usable)
SM Visual (committed: mesh-finished, texture-60%; possibly revisited in future)
J2 Texture (commited: room for improvement)
LRV (committed: mesh-finished, texture-90%; in future a ground up rebuild may be in order, but not on my plans)

I use Max. I discovered I can locate some of the errors prior the file transfer in Max by exporting it as a mesh and reload that mesh. It looks like I have to change the triangulation of some of the polygons in order to have them correctly shaded in the later mesh file.
I should be back online from my home during next week, then I will post some screenies of the tough ones. Looking forward to your ideas then!
Also, I'll try to get in touch with
alaintd
too, he must have a wealth of knowledge on that matter, considering his incredible work done for his ARESA world add-on.

You're using the max2msh script right?

Well, if that is the one from mindblast, yes I used to use this in the past. However not in the recent export trials, since I was getting an error message every time. Though I know it has to do with the assigned materials within Max, so I will look into this in the coming days.

You can't have multi-materials....beware of this because GMax and 3DSMax will do this to you at the drop of a hat. That may be the problem.

These links might help with the eventual LM VC interior.

Just a quick update:
Today is a great day for me, since I finally could resolve the frustrating polygon -> mesh conversion issues which ruined the look of my models once they were in Orbiter. The problem is gone! I am not yet sure, what exactly solved it, but it most probably had to do with multiple materials and doubled faces in Max, which haven't been obvious. This is fantastic, since now the model looks in Orbiter just the way it looks in Max. I can't tell you how happy I am now. I felt really bad, since my progress and contribution here was going so awfully slowly, but I was terribly frustrated of the mentioned issues. NOW, THAT IS HISTORY! Hail my new machine, errr I mean the mighty probe
Finally, the ascent stage mesh looks in Orbiter like I want it to:
Updates coming soon!
