I think the crack might have happened during a transport of the capsule. The Apollo hardware is about 4 decades old and I sadly have to realize on some photos across the web that obviously it is not always handled very carefully.
While we work on that stuff and recreate it for Orbiter, it actually always is a little bit strange when I think about the fact that those who invented all the Apollo technology (and especially the instrument panels

) are mostly between 70 and 80 years old meanwhile and partly even death already. Although on the other hand the technology somehow still is "modern", because nobody traveled to the moon manned with any different technology until today

I wish I could visit the Apollo hardware too some day in the USA. But I fear this is going to happen at a time when most of the former Apollo people will be death already which will turn Apollo into real history. The remaining people/witnesses of that amazing NASA era are going to disappear within the next years...
