Open Shuttle Project

Well with the new forums its time to get this project started.
Open Shutte will be for OpenKosmos as the Shuttle Fleet is to orbiter. From Enterprise to Endeavour this project hopes to offer as near to a complete simulation of the shuttle fleet.
So here we go this multi year project starts!

Sounds like a good idea. I don't know if this is possible, but a big (and I mean BIG) project like this could get off to a fast start if there was already existing code for a shuttle (even just something basic) that could be used as a starting point. Of course that means convincing someone who has developed such code to allow it to be contributed under the GPL agreement. This is the way the "Project Apollo - NASSP" open source project got started. Maybe Martin would be agreeable to this, allowing the use of the Atlantis code?

maybe it could also have a flight panel with almost all working switches, making it similar to project apollo, and also with checklists, kind of like the S3 sim, but even better

For what it's worth, the AP-101 (GPC) is a modified IBM 360, which is already emulated by the Hercules project. If someone can talk NASA out of binaries (or maybe even source code!) for PASS and BFS, you may be able to do a Virtual GPC like the Virtual AGC and run the real code. ^_^

Unfortunately I doubt they'll want to release software until after the last shuttle mission is flown...

I don't see why - It's coded on taxpayers' time, and pretty useless to just about anyone unless they have a shuttle, or a virtual duplicate thereof. I can't think of anything classified that might be in it unless they have an abort site at a secret UFO base or something like that.

Is it possible to use the Freedom of Information act of 1966 to get the code?

I'd ask politely first. Then try that if they don't want to cooperate. No sense in making enemies before you have to.

Hahaha nice one!
No problem I will contact NASA first about the code.

IMHO it's a simple security issue: OK, it's unlikely that a hacker could find a bug in the code and somehow send a transmission to the shuttle through TDRS to exploit it, but why take the risk when they're still flying? The last thing you want is to start getting porn ad popups on the shuttle displays during launch and re-entry
.
I'd say it's still worth contacting them anyway, if only to give them a good reason to keep copies of the software around for the future.
While you're at it, you could ask them whether the LVDC software ever turned up
.

The PASS and BFS source/binaries are not going to be made available anytime soon. Simple fact is they are protected by ITAR. (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Traffic_in_Arms_Regulations
).
Maybe some years after the end of the program the source may get released....
It's not so important to have the code to begin a project like this, the main thing is to properly simulate the hardware. The CSM and LM are simple compared to the Shuttle, but the principles are the same. The project would have to begin with a basic PASS/GPC simulation, to which the real code could be added in the future.
The shuttles avionics are much more challenging than Apollos, the AGC just accepts what you tell it via the input lines, the GPCs rely on 1553B busses and being able to talk to all the BCUs on the bus.
No reason not to start on the systems, but so many years of fun to be had with Apollo (and Apollo goes to the moon!).
Sadly S3/SpaceShuttle Mission doesn't offer the real hardcore simmer much help, sure all the switches do something, but the avionics are totally fake and anybody who has read more than a little about shuttle avionics will find SpaceShuttle Mission lacking (you can't restring, do set expansions/contractions etc...or any other CORE gpc stuff like that).

Current Work: ?? What next??
Future Work:
I know the AGC pretty well so anything need doing there?
On Hold/Completed:
SPS TVC in P40 issues.
P11 FDAI Error Needles (98%) complete. Comitted. Working A7 scenario.
P06 AGC Standby. Concluded. It's done by the AGC PSU.
Got us a complete AOH Volume II
