Thanks for fixing Apollo 7 Happy. If you feel like being really fancy, on the other missions they should be hinged until they reach about 45 degrees, and then seperate.

I don't know enough about Orbiter animations to figure out how to do that, though the difference between that operation and what we currently have is fairly small.

I guess we should have a particle effect for the 'explosion' between the panels too.

I tried to do something like this and committed it, but I'm not sure if anyone will notice the difference actually. You should use Quickstart mode and separate in external view by pressing "J", otherwise you proably will miss the whole sequence. Also I'm not sure if the "separation thruster" particles are really fancy, it's the same stuff used at stage separation, so if you want to improve this, feel free to do, I'm not very good in designing particle streams...
