Paper Bag Owls

We began this language arts activity by making a list of facts we already knew about owls. After reading All About Owls , by Jim Arnosky, additional information was added to the list. We made a word web to organize the information we had gathered and wrote individual reports about owls.

As an extension activity, we created paper bag owls. To make our owls, we stuffed a lunch bag with shredded paper. A second bag was placed over the stuffed bag, top down. Then we added facial discs, eyes, ears, beaks, wings, and feet with paper scraps and cotton. Painted feathers added the finishing touch!

Owl Reports:

Owls are interesting birds. Owls live everywhere except Antartica. Owls hunt at night. They eat mice and rats. Bigger owls eat rabbits, snakes, weasels, and other owls. Owls swallow their prey whole and spit up a pellet with bones and hair later. Owls have large eyes so they can see when they're hunting at night. Owls are smaller than they look because of all their feathers. Their feathers have soft edges so they can fly silently. Owls' eyes can't move so when they want to look at something on the side, they have to turn their whole head to see it. Owls have little tufts of feathers that look like ears or horns. Owls' ears are hidden in feathers beside the eyes. Owls have baby owls called owlets or chicks. Owls chew food for their chicks to eat and they spit it up. Owls are neat!

Owls seem scary but they're not. They can turn their heads to face backwards. Their young cannot fly when they're first born. When they are three months old they can go and live by themselves. Owls have terrific eyesight and hunt at night. They eat mice and rats. Bigger owls eat weasels, snakes, rabbits, and ducks. They spit up the bones, fur, and teeth. The babies do not eat pieces of meat whole. The mother chews it up and then she spits it up and the babies eat it. Adult owls eat their food whole. Some people sometimes think that the owls choke when they eat it whole but they don't . I love learning about owls.
