Interview and information victories: Dan Gillmor and Mark Trustin
The Tar Heels are not the only ones celebrating.
Our first day as national champions, and I am traveling to Durham.
Just as a disclaimer, there is more to Durham than that other school that starts with a 'd' and ends in an 'ook.' But this morning I am traveling down Tobacco Road/US 15-501 to interview Mark S. Trustin, an attorney who represents students suspended from public school systems. Although he does not specifically represent Latino students suspended from school, I am looking forward to hearing about his experiences.
I have many questions for Mr. Trustin, but I would like to know the most common reason for suspensions in the Triangle area. I feel he will have strong opinions about the school systems, and I look forward to hearing them IN ADDITION to video taping them (because I know how to edit and produce a YouTube video now).
SO GREAT!
The future of news: still possible.
Monday I was able to listen to Dan Gillmor speak about the future of news media. The one thing Professor Thornburg has said all semester is that journalism is a conversation, but I was reminded of this when Mr. Gillmor said the first step to a conversation is listening.
As a reporter in today's new age of mobile uploads and other social networking sites, having reader participation is imperative to be successful.
When we say we want to hear you stories, we mean it (seriously though). This project can win the "N.C. will improve the high school dropout rate" national championship if the community works together. We're not asking for slam dunks; just that you will be present.
My goals for the week:
This week I will be putting together video clips from my interview with Mr. Trustin and getting in touch with my new Facebook Latino student friends.
ADELANTE, TAR HEELS!
